WILLIAM & MARY MASCOT AR FILTER HOMECOMING AR INSTAGRAM FACE FILTER
BACK TO OVERVIEW

The College of William & Mary’s Alan B. Miller Entrepreneurship Center wanted to offer students a highly shareable and viral experience that could be launched during homecoming games and activities. We worked together with them to create the university’s first ever augmented reality face filter on Instagram. As the user, when you launch the face filter, you immediately see yourself as the school’s mascot, the Griffin – a “mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle”.  The coat of arms of King William and Queen Mary was adorned with lions, and the lion’s body of their mascot evokes their historic royal founding and early history. The eagle’s head of the Griffin suggests the national symbol of the United States and represents the presidents, leaders and productive citizens whom William & Mary has educated for centuries (from William & Mary’s website (https://www.wm.edu/about/mascot/about/index.php). What better way to fuse tradition and technology than to launch an augmented reality face filter that can be used by anyone with an Instagram account?!
